Most travel dreams begin with Destinations that host iconic, once-in-a-lifetime experiences… This is especially true at a time when we’re all relishing a return to travel with greater appreciation and mindfulness, and a growing desire for escape. While we wait for the dust to settle, we celebrate a seasonal event that features high on the travel bucket lists of nature- and wildlife-lovers everywhere.

Introducing a destination whose travel content is spectacularly showcased in Wetu:

The Great Wildebeest Migration, Kenya

Their journey rotates across the Serengeti and leads the vast herds of wildebeest into the juicy acacia woodlands of the Masai Mara in Kenya, around July (every year, like clockwork). There they remain for the rest of the year, grazing the plains, playing their part in the ecosystem: they trample the vegetation under-hoof, aiding pollination, which keeps the plains healthy and supports new growth. Science can only speculate why they make this perilous journey, with crocodiles, wild cats and hyenas dogging their every move. Whether it’s in search of a more nutritious food source or to evade predators, for the next few months at least, the grass appears to be greener on the other side of the Serengeti.

They only travel when the entire herd is ready, once calves have grown strong enough to keep up. Scenes of wildebeest catapulting foward en masse, through rivers and kicking up dust, have tested many nature and wildlife photographers, professional and amateur. But they’re more than force of nature – wildebeest teach us a few important life lessons: the risks they take and challenges they face, finding safety in their numbers, their laser focus on reaching their end goal, it all sounds like a master class in resilience… 🐂
